Able to grow and produce nuts for almost 200 years, Pecan Trees are a typically durable species. However, they do have growth stipulations and requirements to ensure a bounty harvest and a happy tree. As pecan trees provide so many ample benefits to your property, there’s no wonder why many homeowners are opting to plant these trees.

Pecan trees need a specific type of environment to thrive,  just like any other plant. A tree’s ability to grow and produce depends on many factors, including temperature, soil type, and amount of sunlight. Here at Georgia Pecan Nursery, we’ve compiled a list of general tips and tricks to plan and cultivate your happy pecan tree.

Understanding Your Tree Types

In accordance with the current recommendations, Elliott, Jenkins, McMillan, and Syrup Hill pecan trees are best suited for home planting. According to general belief, cultivars of this type of pecan tree are unlikely to be negatively impacted by typical plant diseases and fungi, making them ideal for harvesting.

Whereas the Schely variety, for instance, is prone to pecan scab, a fungus disease, and will seldom produce fruitful crops if not sprayed. You can determine which cultivar of pecan tree to plant when you know what tree species your pecan tree is. The type of tree, the nut size, and the resistance to disease can differ accordingly. A local tree nursery will be able to help you correctly identify your tree type and which will work best for your at home or orchard needs.

Growth Requirements

Healthy roots are necessary for trees to thrive. The soil in which your trees are planted must support healthy roots. A tree’s success is dependent on providing it with the materials it needs to flourish, since it grows directly from the ground. Various soils have different qualities. These include the amount of nutrients and drainage capabilities they provide. Pecan Trees tend to prefer deep soils that are well-drained, fertile, and able to hold water. The soil should be loamy, acidic, and alkaline.

When it comes to temperature, pecan trees do have a preference as well! Even though they prefer moderately warm weather, pecan trees can tolerate moderate temperatures for a short time. In colder seasons, temperatures below 20 degrees are not as dangerous, but temperatures between 45 and 55 degrees are ideal. On the other hand, pecan trees don’t do well in temperatures exceeding 80 degrees.

A pecan tree’s access to water is essential as well. They need about 60 inches of water a year in order to grow. When water is plentiful in an area, both rainwater and irrigation can be used. Make sure you have assessed your property when planting Georgia Pecan Trees to ensure they will receive adequate water.

Planting Your Trees

In order for your trees to produce delicious nuts, you are definitely going to need to plant more than one. However, you should space them about 60 to 80 feet apart if you are planting more than one tree. Upon having decided whether your area is suitable for pecan trees, you will need to then decide where to plant them. Your first consideration here should be spacing. Typically, pecan trees reach a height of around 100 feet and a width of 50 feet (some grow taller, some shorter).

Because of this, they will take up a lot of space when they are planted. When planting young trees, remember that they grow very tall, so be careful about where you place them. Any obstacles that could interfere with the growth of the tree should be avoided, such as overhanging parts of buildings and power lines.
